Eureka Springs History Timeline

Step back in time in Eureka Springs and discover the rich history that shaped our town into what it is today:

  • Pre-1800s: Long before European settlers arrived, Eureka Springs was inhabited by several indigenous Native American tribes who had used the springs for centuries.
  • 1856: The healing springs were “discovered” by Dr. Alvah Jackson, who used the waters to cure his son’s eye ailment. He began selling “Dr. Jackson’s Eye Water” to the public, and word of the miraculous waters began to spread throughout the country.
  • 1879: Eureka Springs was founded as a city, and wood buildings were constructed to accommodate the growing tourist population.
  • 1881: Eureka Springs is declared a “City of the First Class” and emerges as the fourth largest city in Arkansas.
  • 1882: Eureka Springs Improvement Company was formed to bring the railroad to the city and increase facilities for the growing tourist population.
  • 1886: The Crescent Hotel, then the most luxurious resort hotel in America, opened its doors.
  • 1880s: Four fires throughout the decade destroyed most of the early buildings.
  • 1900: Eureka declined as a tourist destination as interest in the springs declined and society gained more confidence in science and medicine.
  • 1920s-1960: Auto-tourism started becoming popular, bringing a new type of visitor to Eureka Springs.
  • 1960s: Beaver Lake was built, bringing additional recreational activities to the region. A new generation of artists moved to Eureka Springs inspired by the Victorian architecture and the beauty of the Ozarks.
  • 1970s: The entire downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
