When visiting Eureka Springs Historic District, it’s hard to ignore the charming history of the town. Beautiful Victorian architecture dots the landscape, and the entire downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. This small Arkansas town owes its early prosperity to the underground hot springs rumored to have healing powers. Although the indigenous Osage Nation already knew about the springs’ for decades, it wasn’t until the mid 19th century that the word started to spread. This was when a local doctor declared, “eureka!” after using the spring water to heal his son. Ever since that moment, Eureka Springs has become a tourist destination for those looking to remedy their ailments at the mystical hot springs.
